When Edinburgh’s pandas disappear suspicion falls on gangsters from Glasgow.
The daughter of Malcolm from Morningside (respectable resident of Edinburgh’s quiet suburb) has married Brian, a dim-witted Buckfast-swilling ned, son of a family of scary Glaswegian gangsters. When the pandas from Edinburgh Zoo go missing Malcolm is horrified that suspicion is falling on himself.
With the imminent state visit of a foreign VIP the call goes out for people to impersonate the pandas and it is Brian, Malcolm’s son -in law, who gets the job. Failing miserably he is sacked and Malcolm has to don the panda suit himself as the foreign VIP (a slightly gullible sort easily taken in by fake news) comes to meet what he believes are a pair of “wonderful ambassadors for China”.
Switching between his cast of broad Scottish caricatures Robin Cairns delivers a highly improbable but thoroughly enjoyable hour’s entertainment. Having made his first appearance at The Fringe back in 1981 Cairns is looking forward to the hard graft and elusive glory of another August in Edinburgh.
