The Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Centre

We’re proud to announce that on the 6th of July we will be hosting The Scene‘s inaugural event! An informal creative networking event featuring two directed readings of new plays. Written by two fresh playwrights and QMU alumni. In collaboration with 3rd year acting and performance students from QMU and Napier. An event by students for students (past and present) to come together and get to know the thriving creative community in Edinburgh.

The two performed plays take a look at different facets of the society we live in. Bringing to light different narratives, both historical and fictional, in order to question and satirise the world in which we live.

The Plays

Mother of Bombs by Jonathan Kelly

What starts out as a simple meeting for an impending demonstration turns into a battle of accusations and hypocrisy as members of the same cause turn on each other for mistakes made in the past. An exploration into the boxes we put victims and abusers in as a society, and whether or not a person’s past dictates their future.

The Living Newspaper by Jack Hunter

The not so distant future. The Tabloid media has disbanded after a world wide data leak, causing mass panic. All journalists have been rounded up and sent to camps in an event known as the “Rewrite” where they are forced to edit the history books and remove any bias or slander. The news has been watered down to vague press releases by the Simplification Centre. Nobody knows what to believe. Siblings, Simon and Sharon meet a mysterious man who claims to have a truth telling machine.
