Alexander Johnston Library

The Alex Johnston Reference Library holds an important and wide-ranging collection of material on esotericism; comparative religion; philosophy; psychology; spiritually-based scientific paradigms; and other subjects. Much of our library content is original with some dating back to the 18th and 19th Centuries. We also constantly seek to augment our collection with works relating to new paradigms currently pouring forth from various sources, reiterating many ancient ideas and esoteric principles. On this basis, our library is well equipped to meet the demands of academics, students and the general public.

Hazel Martin gives psychic and spiritual readings at the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Centre

Annie Broadley

In her work, Annie uses a variety of materials, both water and oil based. When working on canvas she mixes pigments with linseed oil and turps, glue, beeswax, wax emulsion, egg tempera and a variety of other substances. For paper-based compositions Annie likes to experiment with monoprints, collage and water-based Hydrus Inks.  Using this technique, she produced a painting for the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh which was printed onto silk and made into a scarf which has subsequently been modelled by Dame Joanna Lumley. She has been working at the top of the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Centre since it was founded in 2011.

Ilaria Patrizii Bernardi

Ilaria is an intuitive tarot and oracle reader. After years of timid curiosity, she started a regular practice of studying and journaling, leading to many readings for family and friends. Seeing how her small circle of “querents” kept growing, she finally decided to approach it professionally and joined the Centre’s team. She firmly believes that all the answers lie within us, but sometimes it can be hard to see them, and we need tools to help us. Like a mirror held in front of us, Tarot can be that tool.

Susan Lancaster

Hello!  My name is Susan (she/her) and I am a long-standing therapeutic practitioner based here in the beautiful building at 25 Palmerston Place, and it is a joy to welcome you into my deeply restorative and compassionate therapeutic space.  My current research interests are around how we store emotional pain and trauma in the body and is supported through previous and current postgraduate study. Massage is an age-old art of working with and on the body, focussing on soft tissue manipulation to achieve therapeutic benefit.  And that stands irrespective of the hands-on purpose relaxation, loosening of tightness, or relieving gnarly congestion.  There is a beauty in the process that brings back a sense of space and ease.  Our bodies are complex things, using an informed hands-on approach combining years of experience, training and awareness, alongside deepening intuitive of what your body is telling me is a restorative, nurturing and healing experience.
