About
Peter Barratt returns to The Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Centre for the 2023 Fringe.
Peter Barratt gives a stirring and passionate account of his great-grandmother’s hard-fought campaign for the right to vote over 100 years ago.
A shoe machinist by trade, lifelong socialist, and mother of six, Alice formed her local city suffragette branch in 1907 following imprisonment in Holloway Jail. She dedicated her life to campaigning for women’s rights and is celebrated now for her world changing accomplishments.
The Centenary year of 2018 marked a statue unveiled of Alice in her home town of Leicester together with original suffragette memorabilia exhibited at UK Parliament, including her sash, hunger-strike medal and more.
Sister suffragette Ruth Pownall adds true theatre to an unmissable spoken word show, telling Alice’s story to the world.

About Peter Barratt
Peter Barratt is an accomplished and enthusiastic speaker on the life of his great-grandmother Alice. With oral history passed down over the family generations and illustrated by suffrage memorabilia that once belonged to Alice it is an engaging and fascinating account of one woman’s campaign for equality at the ballot box.
A guest on many local and national radio and TV programmes, including BBC The One Show, BBC2 Jeremy Vine, BBC3 Sunday Feature, BBC4 Saturday Live and more.
Previous speaker venues include the Edinburgh Fringe, Houses of Parliament, The National Archives and numerous adult groups and societies. Schools are a speciality including both primary and secondary.
At the Edinburgh Fringe and at selected venues around the UK, Peter and actress Ruth Pownall perform a dramatized spoken word show of Alice’s life and campaign for ‘the vote’. The show is performed to sell out audiences and is scheduled for the Edinburgh Fringe in 2022.
