Leading First Aid in Mental Health: Two Day Course

Each year approximately 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience a mental health condition and at least 1 in 6 employees experience common mental health problems in the workplace. Research has shown that work is the biggest cause of stress which can stop people performing at their best. Mental health conditions are often hidden.

This 2-day course goes into detail on a wide range of mental health conditions and the support and help provided by healthcare professionals. It is open to all and aimed at trainers and supervisors within the workplace.

Learning Outcomes

  • Know what mental health is, why people develop mental health conditions and the role of the first aider.
  • Know how to provide advice and practical support for a person presenting a mental health condition.
  • Know how to recognise and manage stress.
  • Understand the impact of substance abuse on mental health.
  • Understand the first aid action plan for mental health and be able to put it into place.
  • Know how to implement a positive mental health culture in the workplace.
  • Understand a range of mental health disorders and the support/therapy provided by healthcare professionals


A range of methods are used to assess the learners, including practical and questioning [open and multiple choice]. On successful completion of the course a certificate will be awarded to the learner. The certificate is awarded through Nuco Training Ltd who are an Approved Training Centre with First Aid Awards Ltd an Ofqual Regulated Awarding Organisation.

Meet the Trainer

Jan Tripney

Jan Tripney has worked as a mental health practitioner within the NHS for over 24 years where she has had the opportunity to work with individuals and families in both the inpatient and community settings with a wide range of mental health conditions.

Although Jan continues to work part-time within the NHS, she has her own private practice where she provides a range of interventions with a more integrative approach to mental health and well-being.

MA Psychotherapy [MNCPS Acc,] MA Psychodynamic Psychosocial Nursing, Registered Mental Health Nurse, BSc[hons] Professional Practice in Mental Health. Mental Health First Aid Instructor. Reiki Master, Hypnotherapist, Past Life Regression [MPLA].
