About

The Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Centre is delighted to welcome back Tim Hunter for the 2023 Fringe.

After performing The Story of Captain James Cook in 2022, Tim Hunter returns to the Fringe to narrate and perform songs taken from his latest concept album, The Progressive Campaign. The show is based on the events that led to the slave trade being abolished throughout the British Empire by Parliament, mainly through the efforts of Independent Yorkshire MP, William Wilberforce.

This entertaining musical take on Wilberforce’s story (and of other campaigners, like John Newton) will celebrate and inform. The shows coincide with Wilberforce’s birthday and feature John Newton’s hymn Amazing Grace, first performed 250 years ago.

About Tim Hunter

My main project is in the Prog/Art Rock/Theatrical sphere: ‘TimMusicWorld’ – specialising in music inspired by Yorkshire history and culture. There are many ‘side projects’, though, e.g. ‘Light Engineering’ leans towards the esoteric end of 80s pop.  I also compose instrumental music: this ranges from electronica and prog through to Smooth Jazz. Instrumental influences include Peter White, Mike Oldfield,Vangelis and Tangerine Dream. Songwriting-wise I’m influenced by anything Trevor Horn was involved in, plus 10cc; Supertramp; Genesis, Steely Dan; The Alan Parsons project, Al Stewart and many more including, of course, The Beatles
