The History of Tarot

Tarot is a fascinating system of divination that has a rich and complex history spanning several centuries. Its origins are shrouded in mystery, and the exact details of its development are still debated among scholars. Nevertheless, the history of tarot is intertwined with various cultural, religious, and esoteric traditions. Let’s explore the story behind the tarot cards.

The precise origins of tarot cards are uncertain, but they are believed to have emerged in the 15th century in Europe, primarily in northern Italy. The earliest surviving decks, such as the Visconti-Sforza tarot deck, were commissioned by wealthy noble families and were lavishly hand-painted. These early decks, known as “tarocchi,” were not initially intended for divination but were primarily used for playing card games.

The tarocchi decks consisted of a set of playing cards divided into four suits: swords, cups, coins (later known as pentacles), and batons (later known as wands). Each suit had ten numbered cards and four court cards, consisting of a king, queen, knight, and page. In addition to these, there were a series of 22 symbolic picture cards called the “trumps” or “major arcana.” These trumps depicted various archetypal figures and allegorical scenes, ranging from The Fool to The World.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, tarot cards began to be associated with esoteric and occult practices. Influenced by the growing interest in mysticism, secret societies, and the occult revival, scholars and occultists started interpreting the tarot as a system of spiritual knowledge and divination. They saw the symbolism within the cards as a means to access hidden wisdom and insights into the human condition.

Since the creation of the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, countless variations and reinterpretations of tarot decks have emerged. Artists and designers have put their unique twists on the cards, creating diverse decks that cater to different aesthetics and spiritual traditions. Some decks draw inspiration from specific cultures or mythologies, while others focus on particular esoteric systems or personal interpretations.

Today, tarot remains a widely practiced form of divination and self-exploration. People from various backgrounds and belief systems use tarot cards to gain insight, explore their subconscious minds, and seek guidance on life’s challenges and decisions. The tarot’s enduring popularity is a testament to its enduring symbolism and its ability to resonate with individuals seeking deeper meaning and connection.
