ABOUT
Science and spirituality: partners in the quest for truth
This talk presents a new scheme for understanding how science and spirituality exist as complementary and harmonious domains of enquiry. Dr Robinson will argue that they are natural partners that feed off each other and balance each other. The argument starts with looking at their co-evolution through the modern era, and how they share the values of modernity in common; innovation, pluralism, experience-based knowledge, and the empowerment of the individual.
This complementary relationship between science and spirituality can be conceived dialectically via seven polarities, which together comprise the basis of the MODI (Multiple Overlapping Dialectics) model of how science and spirituality relate. These seven dialectics are: (1) Outer-Inner, (2) Personal-Impersonal, (3) Thinking-Feeling, (4) Thinking-Feeling, (5), Immanent-Transcendent (6), Mechanistic-Purposive, (7) Verbal-Ineffable. The model will be presented with examples and discussion.
