The Psychology of Spontaneous Spiritual Awakenings

Spontaneous spiritual awakenings (SSAs) are characterised by a sudden sense of direct contact, union or communion with the universe, ‘cosmic consciousness’, ‘God’ or the divine. In this enlightened or nondual state, the experiencer transcends their ordinary sense of self, ‘knowing’ or ‘re-membering’ their true essence as part of a greater truth or reality, in perceived oneness and self-realisation. The scientific community is only just beginning to acknowledge the healing potential of mystical experiences mediated by psychedelic drugs and spiritual contemplative practices, yet awakening experiences of a sudden, spontaneous nature have scarcely been explored within the scientific framework, despite a vast amount of anecdotal evidence pointing to their long-term impacts on perception, cognition, behaviour, and well-being. To date, mainstream psychology has tended to pathologise these experiences by default, and the topic is still largely misunderstood and misinterpreted – particularly in the West.

In this talk, we will explore these experiences in more depth, including their sensory, affective, cognitive, and physical effects/expressions, the long-term changes they may catalyse, and what we know about the psychological and neuroscientific underpinnings of awakening-type experiences so far. I will then discuss the importance of ‘de-mystifying’ mystical experiences within mainstream psychology, and conclude by sharing my thoughts on how these experiences (and their research) might help facilitate humanity’s progress towards a more compassionate, understanding and united world.

Join us online on the 14th of June for this insightful talk.

About Jessica Corneille

A psychologist with a special interest in understanding the nature of consciousness, Jessica’s work is at the intersection where science and spirituality meet. Her greatest interests lie both in informing mainstream psychology to look beyond the current designated spectrum of ‘normality’ – to encompass the transpersonal as something that is intrinsic to the human experience, and in helping individuals come to the realisation of their highest human potential.
