Lance Butler Between Two Enlightenments Tuesday Talks

Tuesday Talks

Between Two Enlightenments

5th October 2021 | 7.30pm until 9.00pm BST | £5 | Online

Have We Been Fooling Ourselves?

On the 5th of October we invite you to join our Chairman, Professor Lance Butler who has prepared a talk that relates to his new book, Between Two Enlightenments.

The sequel to the Enlightenment, known as modern life, has expanded our horizons enormously but it has also reduced and restricted us. We have lost identity and relationship and our minds have become fragmented and are often little short of foolish. In particular we haven’t found a way of prioritising, as we must, the only things we surely have: consciousness and (hence) experience. These things are what the word ‘life’ means.

We need some form of detachment from the empty counting and measuring that are at the heart of the Enlightenment project. We need to focus less on having, and less even on doing, when our task is being. A more Buddhist detachment may restore our own experience to us and get us beyond the impasses of politics and mechanical science. We need less focus on the outside and more on the inside, for that is where our lives are actually lived.

Join us at 7:30 PM BST via ZOOM. Lance’s Tuesday Talk will last for around 45 minutes and is followed by a live Q&A.

You can purchase a ticket online for £5.00 (plus ticket processing fee) or you can call us on 0131 625 0700 to book over the phone (no fee). Season passes are available and grant access to all the Autumn 2021 talks for a heavily discounted price.
