ABOUT
Founded in Philosophy, Informed by Anatomy
Yoga is a complex and multifaceted entity, one which often gets reduced to workouts and sun salutations when viewed through a Western lens. In our classes, the goal is to use Asana the way it was designed to be used by Patanjali – the father of Yoga; as a small part of something much larger, a stepping stone to understanding ourselves.
Join Sophie at 6pm on Wednesdays via ZOOM for a Yin session. In Yin, focus on long-held poses, using the support of pillows and props to aid the posture. Yin is the calming energy force. Learn to harness this by relaxing all parts of the body through breath work and mindfulness.
What to Expect in Yin Yoga
Expect a slow-paced sequence where you will hold your asanas for longer than other styles of yoga. The passive poses work to stimulate particular subtle energy channels as understood in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Yin yoga helps stretch the connective tissues around your joints and will help you to be able to sit more comfortably and for longer periods of time (in meditation for instance).
For your Yin class you will need a couple of yoga blocks (or big books), a blanket/towel, and 2 or 3 pillows varying in firmness/thickness where possible. If you have a yoga bolster or meditation cushion these would come in handy.

About Sophie O’Brien
With emphasis on embodiment and a true belief in the therapeutic potential of this practise, Sophie’s aim as your guide is to help you feel more comfortable and content in the body you live in.
Her teaching style – as much as a fragmented representation of an ancient, multifaceted spiritual practise can – aims to honour the history and tradition of Yoga & meditation. Combining this with solid grounding in anatomy and human variation, Sophie aims to support every body, as they are, who shows up to practise; hopefully creating an environment where students can feel safe, supported, and welcome.
In 2019, Sophie completed her 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training in Goa, India. Since then, she has taught for over 1000 hours, and accrued almost 100 further hours of additional, certified training across a variety of topics; the most important – to her – being body positive/inclusive Yoga, Yoga therapy, trauma-informed teaching, and most recently teaching Yoga in community settings.
“Learning Yoga in its birthplace in India gifted me knowledge of the authentic practice; the spiritual in harmony with the physical. This marriage of the philosophical side of Yoga with anatomy and therapeutic modalities is where the magic happens. My aim is to show my students – no matter their ability, body type, or background – their divine power and potential. Because I believe this magic is in all of us.”
